Going Live to share Haiti's plight....

Well, this isn't exactly how I wanted to start my blog about Stevenson. This post isn't even about our journey to bring Stevenson home specifically, but rather about Haiti in general. For months I have hemmed and hawed on getting a blog going to keep friends and family updated on our adoption process of Stevenson and have made it a much bigger task in my mind than it is. There just aren't daily updates - we're lucky if we get anything weekly - or monthly for that matter! Such is the life of an adoptive family with Haiti (or any country these days...). However, I DO have daily thoughts, so I'd like to share them with whoever cares to read, but especially for Stevenson to have one day when he'd like to read them.
So.... like I said, I'm "going live" today, but my reason for starting today is primarily to bring attention to the devastating state in which Haiti and its beautiful people are currently dealing with. Haiti has been hit by 3 hurricanes and one tropical storm within weeks of each other. Can you imagine this happening in the US - the richest country on the earth?! It would be devastating! Now imagine (as best as you can, b/c most of us can't even begin to wrap our minds around it - me included!) if the POOREST country in the Western Hemisphere - where poverty is EVERYWHERE and hunger, malnutrition and death is a way of life for the majority of the people was hit by these storms. Unimaginable suffering. That's all that I can muster. Please take a few moments to visit the sites that I have linked on the right hand side of this blog under "Please Help Haiti". It is tragic that the media here is not covering this much at all. However, until we answered the call to adopt Stevenson, we were completely unaware of what has been going on in Haiti for decades - it simply isn't covered here. I hope to change that - at least among the people I know - so more people can be made aware of what's taking place just about an hour and half flight from Miami....
I know you are wondering how Stevenson is - he is fine we are told. One thing we learned as we had to endure hurricane season last year is that his orphanage is at a high elevation so flooding is not an issue for his "home". That is a blessing. However, the damage to the country - crops, infrastructure(if one can call it that) roads, etc. does affect him. Food prices had been rising to astronomical levels before all this happened - as you can imagine, orphanages don't have a lot of money to purchase food so this means the same amount of money buys much, much less for the kids. Stay tuned for more on Stevenson. Thank you for stopping in to read my babbling - there'll be much more to come! (babbling, that is)

Beautiful writing Chris. We will pray for Haiti. Our bible study prayed for Stevenson in particular last week, but we will pray for the whole country this week.

Chris- thank you for bringing the plight of Haiti to our attention. So sad that they are not receiving assistance and media coverage. I was completely unaware.

So very happy that Stevenson is doing OK. And we are so hoping that he will be home soon.

Chris, thank you for letting your love spill over into this blog. It will inform so many, generate much prayer, and hopefully move some to give financial help to those who so need it.

My grandson Stevenson, when he finally comes home, will have the most loving, active, fun parents and siblings! We thank God for you guys every day. You and Tom are just incredible human beings, and we are so proud of you.

God bless you,
Love, Debbie/Mom/Nana :)

Chris,
I am so happy you started this blog, and it's beautiful! My thoughts are so often w Stevenson and your family--this little guy can't come home soon enough, and I can't wait to meet him! Altho Emily looks to "Kota" as somewhat of a big brother, a girl can never have too many!

Prior to you starting the adoption process from Haiti, I knew very little about the country. I knew that it was a poor country, but I didn't realize just how poor it is. Now, anytime I hear anything about Haiti in the news, I am drawn to it.

You're all in my constant thoughts and prayers.

Chris, I'm so glad you'll be helping us understand more about Haiti, through your blog. I've thought of your family, including Stevenson, with each hurricane and storm in his area. I'm relieved to know his area is higher than other areas in Haiti. I hope the process speeds up for all of you, so that all of your family is under one roof soon.
